As such, I've connected the hard drives with the original Windows 10 install back to the old motherboard, a MSI H87-G43. I have both desktops sitting side-by-side on the floor, so it's still possible to intertwine their individual components to test things. The real kicker is: it's something to do with my new desktop build, as it works fine on my old hardware (plus my laptop) but not the new hardware. I have tried completely removing and reinstalling all variants of the drivers. I can temporarily get sound back by playing with settings in the device's control panel, but it does not last. Note that this happens whether I am using my DAW (Cubase 9) or just playing Spotify or whatever.
Absolutely horrible white noise at full volume, plus a squealing noise. Odd distortion and digital blips occur in the sound until it fails. The last second or so plays on loop like a broken record until it fizzles out and stops playing. The USB light turns off and/or Windows says "a USB device has malfunctioned". To be honest, my old (old old old) Delta66 (ICE1712 chipset) has a zero latency monitor mixer on board but I never use it even though there is a very nice Linux applet to set it up. That doesn’t really matter though as the gain knobs are on the outside and the internal DSP is not something I would trust as anything more that a selling gimmick. The device should work on Linux but any of the internal DSP would not be accessible with out them. So ya the drivers on the github site you mention are your best bet. 
From reading the online faqs it appears it is not even possible to set SR without this glob. There is only one problem, the settings dialog requires separate software which only works on windows or mac. So for audio/MIDI it should be used as a USB2.0 device.
In the manual,, in the Introduction says it communicates on USB 3.0 close to the top, but farther down says: “Supports USB Audio Class 2.0”. Maybe you mean ALSA? Open Sound System on linux is basically dead Low-level OSS pro audio development than I.
